Overview

Al Maha is a 42-villa desert retreat about 45 minutes from Dubai, set inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Every villa has its own plunge pool and deck, and the resort runs on a full-board basis with two guided activities a night included. It suits couples marking an anniversary, and small groups wanting total quiet rather than a lively family base.

Mornings and evenings are built around wildlife drives, falconry, archery, camel and horse riding, all led by a private guide, with buggies ferrying you between your villa and the main building. Al Diwaan is the only proper restaurant, so meals repeat over a stay, but the setting over the dunes carries it. Days are slow: pool time on your own deck, a spa visit, the odd gazelle or oryx wandering past.

This is not a beach resort and there's no sand except desert sand, so don't book it expecting sea swimming. Multiple sources confirm children under 10 are not permitted on the reserve for safety reasons, which rules it out for families with younger kids — it works far better as a couples' or teens-and-up trip. Summer heat means most of the day is spent by the pool rather than outdoors; the cooler months from October to April suit the included activities much better.

Eating and drinking

  • Al Diwaan — The resort's only sit-down restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on a veranda looking straight out over the dunes. International and Middle Eastern dishes, white linen at night, and it's where your full-board meals are taken unless you arrange dune or in-villa dining instead.
  • Hajar Terrace Bar — An open-air bar above Al Diwaan for sundowners, with panoramic desert views. Quiet rather than lively — this is where you watch the sun go down with a drink before dinner, not a late-night spot.
  • SA-RA Lounge — A circular firepit lounge for evening drinks under the stars, a more social alternative to the terrace bar once the sun's down.
  • Private Dune Dining — An arranged dinner out in the dunes with flame torches and carpets laid out, done for two. Worth booking for an anniversary night rather than every dinner of the stay.

Getting there

It's about 45 minutes to an hour's drive from central Dubai, most of it on the highway before a sand track takes you the last few kilometres into the reserve. Self-driving is fine in a normal car — you don't need a 4x4 — and self-parking and valet are both complimentary at the gate. Nearest airport is Dubai International; a transfer is worth arranging if you'd rather not navigate the reserve entrance yourself after dark.
